5 Nutrient Deficiencies women must watch out for

by Souban souban.tie@gmail.com on July 12, 2023

Diet and Lifestyle

Women are often referred to as superwomen for a reason. Whether it’s managing the house or taking care of everyone’s needs in the family, they’re on their toes 24/7. In the quest of this, they completely neglect themselves, and stop paying attention to what their body is telling them. What happens after this is that they start suffering from nutrient deficiencies. Despite consuming a balanced diet, their adequate nutrient intake is not met. Compared to men, a woman’s body in particular undergoes several changes throughout their life. From the time they hit puberty till they reach their 30s and give birth, their nutrient needs keep changing. They deserve some extra care and nurturing, and for that getting all the important nutrients is a must.

What is Nutrient deficiency?

As the term suggests, a nutrient deficiency occurs when the body is not getting enough vitamins and minerals. When the body is deprived of proper nutrition, it shows in the form of dry skin, hair loss, acne, brittle nails, lack of appetite, slow-healing wounds and more. Special diets, lifestyle issues and bad eating habits are a few factors that lead to nutrient deficiencies in women.

Most common nutrient deficiencies in women

Omega 3s

Off late, omega-3s deficiency has come into the limelight. You’ve probably seen food manufacturers put the phrase “a good source of omega-3” on the packaging. Omega-3 refers to a group of fatty acids that are derived from vegetable and animal fats. Special diets can make women prone to this deficiency. Some of the symptoms include problems with hair, skin and nails, insomnia, joint pain and reduced attentiveness. In women, it relieves menstrual cramps, boosts heart health and is an important part of their pregnancy.

Zinc

Zinc is an important micronutrient the body needs to perform various functions. While it helps in maintaining a healthy and strong immune system, it is also crucial for cell growth and protein synthesis. Adult women need at least 8 mg of zinc daily in order to maintain optimal health. Though the quantity required is small, the deficiency can lead to serious side-effects such as loss of appetite and taste, hair fall and slow healing wounds.

Folate

A folate deficiency means you have lower than the normal amount of folic acid in your blood. Folate is a type of B vitamin. Though everyone needs folic acid to be healthy, it is particularly important for women for two main reasons – it keeps the blood healthy by helping red blood cells (RBCs) form and grow, and is critical for a healthy pregnancy. All women need around 400 micrograms of folic acid every day. Pregnant women need about 400-800 micrograms. Folate is important for developing foetuses. It aids in brain development. Supplementing with folate decreases the risk of birth defects.

Vitamin B-12 (cobalamin)

Vitamin B-12 is an essential nutrient for the body. However, it can only be obtained from food or supplements as it is not naturally produced in the body. Vitamin B-12 deficiency is quite common in older women especially vegetarians and vegans. Muscle weakness, fatigue and anemia are a few side-effects of this deficiency.

Vitamin D

Most working women these days have sedentary lifestyles, owing to which they end up being indoors and get very little sunlight. Vitamin D is naturally produced in our bodies when we’re exposed to a good amount of sunlight. However, unfortunately, few of us get out in the sun to make adequate vitamin D. This results in a vitamin D deficiency. Around 42% of people are deficient in this vitamin. Also, since it is found in a very few good food sources, most of us fall short. Muscle weakness and bone loss are a few of the symptoms.
